Ensure Your Electric Motors Leave Our Shop Ready for Reliable Operation

Below is the updated end-to-end process for our “Fit for Service” program, with facility-specific notes. All steps are performed in Calgary and Edmonton, but please note that Calgary’s voltage testing is limited to 3300V (Edmonton can accommodate higher‐voltage tests).

Avoiding the "Dead on Arrival" Spare: A Success Story

A customer recently faced a high-stakes situation: a critical motor was coming out of long-term storage with no record of its condition. With no room for downtime, they utilized our Fit for Service program before installation.

Our inspection and testing identified several issues that would have caused major headaches (or a failure) once the motor was put into service. We corrected the problems, verified the motor was ready, and shipped it back. The result: it was installed and commissioned with zero issues—and the customer avoided a potentially catastrophic situation for a relatively small investment of time and cost upfront.

The Discovery: Our diagnostic testing revealed several hidden issues that would have led to a failure upon startup.

The Solution: We corrected the faults and verified performance in our shop, well before the motor was commissioned and put to work.

The Result: The motor was commissioned with zero issues. For a small upfront investment, the customer avoided a catastrophic failure and protected their production schedule.

1. Ship Us Your Motor

Send your motor to our Calgary or Edmonton facility.

2. “Fit for Service” Inspection

Every motor receives a rigorous multi-point evaluation:

A. Reception & Visual Documentation

  • Record Digital Images: Photographs of the motor as received, including nameplates and any exterior damage.
  • Incoming Visual Inspection: Check for shipping damage, corrosion, loose hardware, oil leaks, etc.

B. Electrical & Offline Circuit Analysis

  • PDMA Motor Winding Analysis: Offline partial discharge and circuit integrity testing to spot insulation breakdown.
  • Auxiliary Electrical Tests: Verify heaters, thermistors, space-heaters, and other auxiliaries are functioning.

C. Mechanical Checks

  • Oil Sump Inspection: Examine and measure oil levels, look for contamination or metal fines.
  • Bearing & Seal Assessment: Check for play, lubrication condition, and proper sealing.

D. No-Load Test Run

  • Full-Voltage, No-Load Run: Energize at rated voltage, record current draw, speed, power factor, and temperature rise.

Facility Note:

  • In Calgary, voltage testing is limited to 3300V

E. Vibration Analysis

  • Final Vibration Check: Collect both spectrum and time-waveform data to detect imbalance, misalignment, or looseness.
  • This step confirms mechanical health post-test run

When Further Evaluation Is Needed

If initial tests indicate deeper issues, we’ll disassemble for a full rotor/stator teardown, dimensional checks, and winding measurements.

3. Reporting & Quoting

  • Fit for Service Report: Complete all findings, images, test data, and verdict—“Go/No-Go” or “Further Repair Required.”
  • Repair Quote: Detailed labour, parts, testing, and warranty breakdown.
  • New-Motor Quote (Optional): Direct-drive replacement pricing for comparison.

4. Repair & Verification

  • Approval & Scheduling: Facility selection (depending on timelines and capacity, we may decide to use a facility other than the one selected at no additional cost to you).
  • Skilled Execution: Electric Motor Systems Techs are diagnosing and repairing.
  • Post-Repair Testing: Repeat no-load run and vibration analysis to verify restored performance.

5. Ongoing Health Monitoring

  • Predictive Maintenance Plan: Customized inspection cadence based on criticality.
  • Digital Trend Reports: Vibration, temperature, and electrical health charts—so you catch deviations early.
