Bearing Protection Solutions for Motors and VFD-Driven Equipment

Protect your motor bearings from high-frequency noise emitted by variable frequency drives (VFDs).

Why Bearing Protection Matters

Protect your bearings. Protect your uptime.
Shaft current damage is one of the most common—and preventable—causes of premature bearing failure in VFD-driven motors. These destructive currents lead to pitting, fluting, excessive heat, and accelerated wear. Left unaddressed, this results in costly downtime, reduced motor life, and unexpected maintenance.

We provide a proven bearing protection solution that eliminates these issues at the source, helping your equipment run longer, more reliably, and with predictable maintenance cycles.

Modern VFDs are essential for energy efficiency and controllability, but they introduce high-frequency shaft currents that discharge through motor bearings. Over time, these currents can cause:

  • Electrical discharge machining (EDM) bearing damage
  • Insulation degradation
  • Bearing overheating
  • Fluting on races
  • Increased vibration
  • Reduced bearing and motor lifespan
  • Unplanned downtime and production interruptions

If your operation relies on VFD-driven motors, bearing protection is not optional; it’s essential.

Bearing Protection Solutions

Continental Electric offers multiple proven strategies to eliminate VFD-induced bearing damage. Each method targets harmful currents differently.

AEGIS® Shaft Grounding Rings

AEGIS rings provide a low-impedance path for harmful shaft currents to safely discharge to ground, preventing them from travelling through the bearings.

Benefits:

  • Very effective for smaller motors and OEM installations
  • Easy to install
  • Provides direct grounding for HF currents
  • Works alongside other protection methods
  • Helps eliminate fluting and EDM damage

Standard Shaft Grounding Rings

For motors where AEGIS is not required or where a simpler grounding solution is preferred, we install high-quality grounding rings that provide a controlled discharge path.

Benefits:

  • Cost-effective
  • Provides a safe bypass route for shaft currents
  • Suitable for many medium-sized motor applications
  • Works well as part of a layered protection strategy

Ceramic / Insulated Bearings

Insulated or ceramic bearings prevent electrical current from passing through the bearing altogether.

Benefits:

  • Permanent electrical isolation
  • Excellent for high-frequency environments
  • Long service life
  • Common in large motors, high-speed applications, and critical equipment

Often used on the non-drive end (NDE) in combination with grounding solutions on the drive end (DE).

CoolBLUE®: Advanced Bearing Protection Technology

Where other solutions redirect or block shaft currents, this technology tackles the problem at its source by absorbing damaging high-frequency currents on the motor leads before they ever reach the motor, making this solution fundamentally different from grounding rings or ceramic bearings.

Benefits:

  • Non-contact, non-invasive solution
  • Maintenance-free with no wear components
  • Works on motors of all sizes
  • Protects the entire drive system—not just the bearings
  • Reduces cable heating, inverter noise, and EMI issues
  • Ideal for high-value, continuous-duty, and critical assets

    More on CoolBLUE®...

CoolBLUE® Inductive Absorbers absorb the noise on the power cables generated from the VFD before it gets to the motor. The CoolBLUE® cores act as a common mode choke (CMC) in this given configuration and dissipate into thermal. No motor modifications, no shaft preparation, very easy installation. Can be added to systems with very minimal downtime.

No costly installations or downtime like traditional grounding ring solutions. No insulated bearings or hybrid bearings.

Read More on the Comparison between the CoolBlue solution and the Old Solution.

While CoolBLUE offers a superior method of reducing high-frequency bearing currents, it isn’t the only solution we provide. Continental evaluates your motor, VFD system, and operating environment first to determine whether CoolBLUE is the correct approach—or if grounding rings, insulation, or a combined strategy will deliver better results for your application.

Installation and Maintenance

One of the standout features of CoolBLUE® is its ease of installation and zero maintenance requirement. Once installed, CoolBLUE® operates seamlessly without needing replacements or regular check-ups.

CoolBLUE® is versatile and can be used across various industries:

HVAC Systems, Manufacturing, Water Treatment, Food Processing, Agriculture and Dairy, Oil & Gas.
